Wall Systems

Retaining Walls, Planter Walls & Decorative Walls Built to the Butler Standard.

Structural integrity starts below grade. Every wall we build begins with proper excavation, compacted base material, drainage, and engineered footers — not shortcuts. Serving Huntsville, Madison, Athens, and all of North Alabama.

What We Build

Three Types of Wall Systems

Most Popular

Retaining Walls

$20K – $40K

Structural walls up to 4 feet tall designed to hold back soil, manage grade changes, and prevent erosion on sloped properties across North Alabama.

  • Compacted aggregate base with geogrid reinforcement
  • Proper footer depth for frost line and soil conditions
  • Integrated drainage system behind the wall face
  • Segmental block, natural stone, or concrete block
  • Engineered for North Alabama's clay soils

Design Feature

Planter Walls

$15K – $20K

Raised planting beds with structural wall faces that define garden zones, frame entries, and add elevation and dimension to flat landscapes.

  • Proper drainage to prevent root saturation
  • Compacted base and footer for long-term stability
  • Enriched soil backfill for healthy plant growth
  • Ties seamlessly into paver patios and walkways
  • Natural stone or block to match your hardscape

Finishing Detail

Decorative & Seat Walls

$15K – $20K

Low-profile walls that define outdoor living zones, provide built-in seating, and frame fire features, kitchens, and entertaining areas.

  • Capped with natural stone, pavers, or custom tops
  • Integrated with fire pits, kitchens, and patio layouts
  • Proper footer and base even on non-structural walls
  • Designed for comfort — height, depth, and spacing matter
  • Matches veneer and material palette across the project

Materials

Built With the Right Material

Natural Stone

Premium appearance with organic texture. Each piece is unique. Ideal for high-visibility walls and estate-level projects.

Segmental Block

Manufactured units (Belgard, Pavestone, etc.) with engineered interlock. Consistent finish, efficient installation, proven performance.

Concrete Block

Structural CMU block for maximum strength. Often used as a structural core behind veneer finishes on larger retaining walls.

Veneer Finishes

Natural or manufactured stone veneer applied over block cores for the look of solid stone at a more accessible price point.

Our Process

What Goes Into a Wall That Lasts

1

Excavation & Footer

We dig to the proper depth based on wall height and soil conditions. The footer is the foundation — skip it and the wall fails. We never skip it.

2

Base & Compaction

Compacted aggregate base material is leveled and verified before a single block is set. This is what keeps the wall straight and stable for decades.

3

Drainage & Backfill

Perforated drain pipe, filter fabric, and clean drainage stone behind the wall face. Water pressure is the number one reason walls fail — we eliminate it.

A Note on Wall Height

Butler & Associates Construction builds residential walls up to 4 feet tall. Walls exceeding 4 feet in exposed height require structural engineering and stamped plans by a licensed engineer — which is outside our scope. If your project requires a taller wall, we're happy to refer you to a qualified structural engineer and coordinate the build once plans are approved.

Common Questions

Wall Systems FAQs

Why does drainage matter behind a retaining wall?
Water is the primary cause of wall failure. When water saturates the soil behind a wall and has nowhere to go, hydrostatic pressure builds up and pushes the wall forward. Proper drainage — perforated pipe, filter fabric, and drainage stone — relieves that pressure and keeps the wall structurally sound for decades. In North Alabama's clay soils, this is especially critical because clay holds water instead of draining it.
What's a footer and why does my wall need one?
A footer is the below-grade foundation that your wall sits on. It's typically a compacted aggregate base excavated to a depth determined by the wall height and soil conditions. Without a proper footer, walls settle unevenly, lean, and eventually fail. Every wall Butler & Associates Construction builds — even decorative seat walls — starts with a proper footer.
Can you build a retaining wall taller than 4 feet?
Walls over 4 feet in exposed height require structural engineering and stamped plans from a licensed engineer. Butler & Associates Construction builds up to 4 feet. If your project requires more, we can refer you to a qualified engineer and coordinate the build once plans are approved.
What's the difference between a retaining wall and a decorative wall?
A retaining wall holds back soil and manages grade changes — it's structural and must resist lateral earth pressure. A decorative or seat wall is freestanding, typically 18–24 inches tall, and serves an aesthetic or seating function. Both need proper footers and base preparation, but retaining walls require additional drainage and often geogrid reinforcement.
How long does a properly built wall last?
A well-built segmental block or natural stone wall with proper base, drainage, and compaction should last 25–50+ years with minimal maintenance. The walls that fail early are almost always the result of skipped footers, missing drainage, or poor compaction during installation.
